Thanksgiving Day Celebrates A Massacre

William B. Newell, a Penobscot Indian and former chairman of the Anthropology department at the University of Connecticut, says that the first official Thanksgiving Day celebrated the massacre of 700 Indian men, women and children during one of their religious ceremonies. "Thanksgiving Day" was first proclaimed by the Governor of the then Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637 to commemorate the massacre of 700 men, women and children who were celebrating their annual Green Corn Dance...Thanksgiving Day to the, "in their own house", Newell stated.

"Gathered in this place of meeting, they were attacked by mercenaries and English and Dutch. The Indians were ordered from the building and as they came forth were shot down, The rest were burned alive in the building-----The very next day the governor declared a Thanksgiving Day.....For the next 100 years, every Thanksgiving Day ordained by a Governor was in honor of the bloody victory, thinking God that the battle had been won."

In June 1637 John Underhill slaughtered a pequot village in just the manner described above. Narranganset Indians were used as the mercenaries. Governor John Endicott of the Massachusetts Bay Colony proclaimed the pequot war. A pequot chief of sachem named sassacus warred against the Dutch in 1633 over the death of his father. The pequot made no distinction between the Dutch and the English. The Underhill massacre was witnessed and documented by William Branford and an engraving was made illustration the massacre.

The Jamestown Colony may be the source for the tradition of Indians under the leadership of Powhaton joining with early settlers for a dinner and helping those settlers through the winter. There were no pilgrims of puritans at Jamestown, however. The present Thanksgiving may therefore be a mixture of the tradition of the Jamestown dinner and the commemoration of the Pequot massacre.

The celebration of Thanksgiving as an official holiday possibly roots in the Pequot massacre, while the imagery is of Jamestown with pilgrims, images misused.

The Pilgrims Ate Turkey

What did the Pilgrims eat at their Thanksgiving festival? They didn't have corn on the cob, apples, pears, potatoes or even cranberries. No one knows if they had turkey, although they were used to eating turkey. The only food we know they had for sure was deer. 11(And they didn't eat with a fork; they didn't have forks back then.)

So how did we get the idea that you have turkey and cranberry and such on Thanksgiving? It was because the Victorians prepared Thanksgiving that way. And they're the ones who made Thanksgiving a national holiday, beginning in 1863, when Abe Lincoln issued his presidential Thanksgiving proclamations...two of them: one to celebrate Thanksgiving in August, a second one in November. Before Lincoln Americans outside New England did not usually celebrate the holiday. (The Pilgrims, incidentally, didn't become part of the holiday until late in the nineteenth century. Until then, Thanksgiving was simply a day of thanks, not a day to remember the Pilgrims.)

The Pilgrims Landed on Plymouth Rock

According to historian George Willison, who devoted his life to the subject, the story about the rock is all malarkey, a public relations stunt pulled off by townsfolk to attract attention. What Willison found out is that the Plymouth Rock legend rests entirely on the dubious testimony of Thomas Faunce, a ninety-five year old man, who told the story more than a century after the Mayflower landed. Unfortunately, not too many people ever heard how we came by the story of Plymouth Rock. Willison's book came out at the end of World War II and Americans had more on their minds than Pilgrims then. So we've all just gone merrily along repeating the same old story as if it's true when it's not. And anyway, the Pilgrims didn't land in Plymouth first. They first made landfall at Provincetown. Of course, the people of Plymouth stick by hoary tradition. Tour guides insist that Plymouth Rock is THE rock.

Pilgrims, Puritans -- Same Thing

Though even presidents get this wrong -- Ronald Reagan once referred to Puritan John Winthrop as a Pilgrim -- Pilgrims and Puritans were two different groups. The Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower and lived in Plymouth. The Puritans, arriving a decade later, settled in Boston. The Pilgrims welcomed heterogeneousness. Some (so-called "strangers") came to America in search of riches, others (so-called "saints") came for religious reasons. The Puritans, in contrast, came over to America strictly in search of religious freedom. Or, to be technically correct, they came over in order to be able to practice their religion freely. They did not welcome dissent. That we confuse Pilgrims and Puritans would have horrified both. Puritans considered the Pilgrims incurable utopians. While both shared the belief that the Church of England had become corrupt, only the Pilgrims believed it was beyond redemption. They therefore chose the path of Separatism. Puritans held out the hope the church would reform.

Party: Cash for Mussolini baby names
Published: Nov. 24, 2008 at 5:35 PM

POTENZA, Italy, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- An Italian political party is offering $1,940 to parents in five cities who name children after World War II-era dictator Benito Mussolini or his wife Rachele.

The far-right Movimento Sociale-Fiamma Tricolore, or Italian Social Movement, said residents of five municipalities in the sparsely populated Potenza province will be eligible for the cash aid provided they name children born in 2009 either Benito or Rachele after the fascist leader and his wife, ANSA reported Monday.

The small political party said the parents must also promise to use the money on cribs, clothes, food or other necessary items for their infants.

Vicenzo Mancusi, the regional head of the party, said the new program "does not resolve the problem of the region's declining population, but it is a small attempt by a small party."

He said the choice of Benito and Rachele as the names for the program was "purely casual. They're nice names."

Women Have More Diverse Hand
Bacteria Than Men

ScienceDaily (Nov. 4, 2008) ― A new University of Colorado at Boulder study indicates that not only do human hands harbor far higher numbers of bacteria species than previously believed, women have a significantly greater diversity of microbes on their palms than men.

The results have implications for better understanding human bacteria and should help establish a "healthy baseline" to detect microbial community differences on individuals that are associated with a wide variety of human diseases, said CU-Boulder Assistant Professor Noah Fierer, lead study author. A paper on the subject by the CU-Boulder researchers was published online Nov. 3 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Using powerful gene sequencing techniques, the team found a typical hand in the new study had roughly 150 different species of bacteria living on it, said Fierer of CU-Boulder's ecology and evolutionary biology department. While the researchers detected and identified more than 4,700 different bacteria species across 102 human hands in the study, only five species were shared among all 51 participants.

"The sheer number of bacteria species detected on the hands of the study participants was a big surprise, and so was the greater diversity of bacteria we found on the hands of women," said Fierer. The study also showed that the diversity of bacteria on individual hands was not significantly affected by regular hand washing, he said.

The 332,000 gene sequences obtained by the CU team were nearly 100 times greater than those obtained from other studies of skin bacteria also obtained by sampling the entire DNA of microbe communities, known as "metagenomics." The new CU-Boulder study also confirms that standard skin culturing of human skin bacteria, a technique used by many labs, dramatically underestimates the full extent of microbial diversity, Fierer said.

Co-authors on the PNAS study included Micah Hamady of CU-Boulder's computer science department, Christian Lauber of CU-Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and CU-Boulder chemistry and biochemistry Assistant Professor Rob Knight. The study was funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

この研究はthe National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundationによって研究費が主に提供されている。

Fierer speculated that skin pH may play a role in the higher bacterial diversity on women's hands, since men generally have more acidic skin, and other research has shown microbes are less diverse in more acidic environments. The findings also could be due to differences in sweat and oil gland production between men and women, the frequency of moisturizer or cosmetics applications, skin thickness or hormone production, he said.

The right and left palms of the same individual shared an average of only 17 percent of the same bacteria types, said Knight. Study volunteers, all CU undergraduates, shared an average of only 13 percent of bacteria species with each other, he said.

Although the composition of bacterial communities on dominant and non-dominant hands of subjects was significantly different, diversity levels were similar, Fierer said. The differences found between dominant and non-dominant hands were likely due to environmental conditions like oil production, salinity, moisture or variable environmental surfaces touched by either hand of an individual, he said.

While some groups of bacteria were less abundant following hand washing, others were more abundant, said Knight, who stressed that regular hand washing with anti-bacterial soap is beneficial. "The vast majority of bacteria are non-pathogenic, and some bacteria even protect against the spread of pathogens," Knight said. "From a public health standpoint, regular hand washing has a very positive effect."

"Although hand washing altered community composition, overall levels of bacterial diversity were unrelated to the time since the last hand washing," wrote the researchers in PNAS. "Either the bacterial colonies rapidly re-establish after hand washing, or washing (as practiced by the students included in this study) does not remove the majority of bacteria taxa found on the skin surface."

The CU-Boulder team used the metagenomic survey to simultaneously analyze all of the bacteria on a given palm surface, said Knight. In simple terms, the effort involved isolating and amplifying tiny bits of microbial DNA, then building complementary DNA strands with a high-powered sequencing machine that allowed the team to identify different families, genera and species of bacteria from the sample.

Knight recently received a $1.1 million NIH grant to develop new computational tools to better understand the composition and dynamics of microbial communities. He has been developing novel methods to tag DNA samples with error-correcting "barcodes" to obtain more accurate sequencing data.

The richness of bacteria types on the palm was three times higher than that found on the forearm and elbow, according to the researchers. The total diversity of hand bacteria appears to match or exceed levels of bacteria colonizing other parts of the body, including the esophagus, the mouth and lower intestine, Fierer said.

"I view humans as 'continents' of microscopic ecological zones with the kind of diversity comparable to deep oceans or tropical jungles," Fierer said. "Today we have the ability to answer large-scale questions about these complex microbial communities and their implications for human health that we weren't even asking six months or a year ago."

Pesticides More Dangerous Than

• UPI, November 13, 2008

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists studying 10 of the world's most popular approved pesticides say, when combined, the chemicals caused 99 percent mortality in tadpoles.

University of Pittsburgh researchers said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved pesticides, when mixed together, can decimate amphibian populations even if the concentration of the individual chemicals is within limits considered safe.

Such "cocktails of contaminants" are frequently detected in nature, the scientists said, noting their findings offer the first illustration of how a large mixture of pesticides can adversely impact the environment.

Associate Professor Rick Relyea, the study's lead author, exposed gray tree frog and leopard frog tadpoles to small amounts of the 10 pesticides -- insecticides carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, endosulfan, and malathion, as well as five herbicides: acetochlor, atrazine, glyphosate, metolachlor, and 2,4-D.

He used each of the pesticides alone, the insecticides combined, a mix of the five herbicides, or all 10 of the poisons.

Relyea found a mixture of all 10 chemicals killed 99 percent of leopard frog tadpoles, as did the insecticide-only mixture.

The study is detailed in the online edition of the journal Oecologia.

Cheney, Gonzales indicted

Published: Tuesday November 18, 2008

A Texas grand jury has indicted outgoing Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County federal detention facilities, CNN reported.

"The vice president has not received an indictment," Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell countered to CNN.

Cheney's stake in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies that run the detention centers, was cited in the indictment. Cheney is accused of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees through his ownership interest.

House of Cards: You thought the housing crisis was bad? You ain't seen nothing yet.

Corporate America | Economic Policy
by Danny Schechter | October 30, 2008 - 9:31am

The Mess

Nationwide, two million homes sit vacant. Home sales are at a nine-year low. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers says that housing finance has not been this bad since the Depression. We still don't know the full extent of the colossal subprime rip-off, but a recent Bank of America study did some guesstimating on the scale of the consequences of the "credit crisis." The meltdown in the U.S. subprime real estate market, the bank said, had led to a global loss of $7.7 trillion dollars in stock market value since October.

While many eyes are focusing on the housing meltdown and its hugely negative effect on an economy clearly moving into recession, few are paying attention to the next bubble expected to burst: credit cards. Combined with the subprime losses, such a credit card nightmare has the potential, experts say, of bringing down the entire financial system and global economy. You and your credit card have become key players in the highly unstable financial crunch. Mortgage lender cupidity and bank credit card greed wedded to financial institution deregulation supported by both political parties, have been made manifestly worse by Bush administration support-the-rich policies. It has brought us to a brink not seen since just before the Great Depression.

While campaigning in Edinburg, Texas, in February, Barack Obama met with students at the University of Texas-Pan American. "Just be careful about those credit cards, all right? Don't eat out as much," he said. After the foreclosure crisis, he warned, "the credit cards are next in line."

The coupling of home equity debt and credit card debt has gone hand in glove for years. The homeowners at risk can no longer use their homes as ATM machines, thanks to their prior re-financings and equity loans, often used in the past to pay off their credit cards. Indeed, homeowners cashed out $1.2 trillion from their home equity from 2002 to 2007 to pay down credit card debts and to cover other costs of living, according to the public policy research organization Demos.

To compound the problem, fewer people are paying their credit card bills on time. And, to flip the old paradigm, more are using high-interest credit card cash to pay at least part of their mortgages instead of the other way around.

How bad is it?

* Financial analysts say that in the U.S. alone more than $850 billion in unpaid credit card balances is at stake and fast approaching $1 trillion, roughly the same amount as in the subprime market.

* CNN reports that worldwide, consumers have racked up more than $2.2 trillion in purchases and cash advances on major credit cards in just the last year.

* The unpaid debt portion of this is continuing to pile up, with U.S. consumers last year adding $68 billion against their credit lines, boosting credit card debt by 7.8 percent, the largest increase in seven years, just when the last recession was beginning.

* Even as they spent, consumers have been going into default at a stunning rate. The percentage of people delinquent on their credit cards is soaring, and credit card companies are now writing off somewhere near 5 percent of payments.

* By last fall, the major banks were setting aside billions for loan-loss reserves while anticipating an increase of 20 percent in non-payments over the next two to four quarters.

* Capital One, one of the biggest credit card banks, was forced to write off $1.9 billion in bad debt just in the last quarter of 2007.

*By October, according to a survey of only the leading credit card banks by the Associated Press, the value of credit card accounts at least 30 days late was up 26% from the previous year, to $17.3 billion. Serious delinquencies among some of the biggest lenders rose by 50 percent or more in the value of accounts that were at least 90 days delinquent.

Making matters worse, or more widespread throughout the economy, just as with mortgage debt, credit card debt is put into pools that are then resold to investment houses, other banks and institutional investors. About 45 percent of the nation's $900-plus billion in credit card debt has been packaged into these pools, and so many companies, not just a few, are at risk of being forced out of business by credit card debt write-offs.

What this adds up to, and what Obama didn't say, is that we are actually face to face with the results of the most massive failure of our political and economic system since the Depression. Since Ronald Reagan, we have been living in an era in which neither the meltdown of the savings and loan banks in the 1980s nor the Enron-like scandals of the Bush years has stopped the relentless advancement and protection by both parties of the ability of financial institutions to make a buck at any cost to the social good and economic fabric. Which is what you get, of course, when both parties are so dependent on massive financial contributions to get their candidates into office and when the corporate media, heavy with advertising from the FIRE sector - Finance, Insurance and Real Estate - doesn't warn the public or investigate the egregious fudging, misrepresentation and outright fraud that underpins the subprime and looming credit card crisis.

The credit card industry (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, etc.) and the 10 banks that dominate the industry as the primary card issuers spend an estimated $2 billion a year in endless marketing worldwide. We are all bombarded with their solicitations and sales tie-ins and gimmicks. They know that they might only have a 2-3 percent return rate, but that more than pays the enormous costs. They have thus succeeded in supplying 1.5 billion cards to 158 million U.S. card holders. That averages to 10 cards per person. In the last few years, retailers, banks, a wide range of companies, sports teams, unions and even universities have launched specialized card programs. Like the car companies that discovered that they made more money on car loans than automobiles, the benefits of what's been called "financialization" is obvious to more business sectors.

What will happen when they do have to pay it back includes nonstop calls to them and their parents. Credit card collection agencies know how to harass, threaten and then sweet-talk cardholders who are late. They even have a term for people squeezed by debt: "sweatbox." They also know that the longer the debt goes unpaid, the larger the potential profit for companies, as interest builds up at rates of up to 30 percent. Credit card promoters call people who only pay minimums "revolvers." Those of us who pay our bills in full? "Deadbeats."

“スエットボックス” "sweatbox."汗の箱と言う意味ですが、脅して冷や汗をかかして思い通りに扱うと言う表現なのでしょう。"revolvers." Deadbeats." “デッドビート”は“どうしようもない奴”と言う訳がぴったりする言葉ですが真面目に返済期限までに返済するクレディットカードの利用者からは高率の利子が取れないので彼等は“デッドビート”と呼ぶのです。此れが資本主義ですから我々はもう少し人間的なシステムを考え出す事が必要なのではないでしょうか?少なくとも市民が資本層、資本主義機構を見張る事の出来るシステムが必要です。

Prevent Disease by Eating More Alkaline Foods

by Sheryl Walters

(NaturalNews) Maintaining a balanced PH is one of the most important things we can do to enjoy vibrant health and avoid disease. Unfortunately, most people are far too acidic, which creates an environment open to unwanted invaders and ill health. The incredible rise in modern day diseases is a symptom of our overly acidic diets.

In fact, many claim it is almost impossible to get cancer when our bodies are consistently alkaline. Furthermore, eating from a list of alkaline foods keep us vibrant and younger looking.

Fortunately, becoming more alkaline is not as difficult or as technical as it sounds. Balancing our PH can be done simply by consuming more foods and drinks which have an alkaline effect on the body.

Here is a list of Alkaline foods for Optimum health:

* Alfalfa アルファルファ

* Barley Grass 大麦青葉

* Beets ビーツ

* Broccoli ブロッコリー

* Cabbage キャベツ

* Carrot 人参

* Cauliflower カリフラワー

* Celery セロリ

* Collard Greens カラードグリーン

* Cucumber 胡瓜

* Dulce ?

* Eggplant 茄子(エッグプラント)

* Garlic 大蒜(ガーリック)

* Green Beans グリーンビーンズ

* Green Peas グリーンピース

* Kale ケール

* Lettuce レタス

* Mushrooms 茸

* Onions 玉葱

* Parsnips パースニップ(ボウフウ)

* Peas 豆

* Pumpkin 南瓜(パンプキン)

* Radishes 大根(ラディッシュ)

* Spinach ホウレン草(スピナッチ)

* Spirulina スピルリナ

* Sprouts モヤシ(スプラウト)

* Sweet Potatoes 薩摩芋(スイートポテト)

* Tomatoes トマト

* Watercress ウォータークレス

* Almonds アーモンド

* Grapes 葡萄

* Amaranth アマランス?

* Apples 林檎

* Apricots 杏(アプリコット)

* Kiwi キウイ

* Artichokes 朝鮮アザミ(アーティチョーク)

* Leeks 韮葱(リーク)

* Asparagus アスパラガス

* Limes ライム

* Bananas バナナ

* Mangos マンゴー

* Olive oil オリーヴオイル

* Berries ベリーズ(種々の苺)

* Onions 玉葱

* Brussels sprouts メキャベツ

* Oranges オレンジ

* Buckwheat 蕎麦

* Okra オクラ

* Pears 梨(ペア)

* Pineapple パインナップル

* Quinoa キノア(南米の穀物。ホウレン草科)

* Fennel フェネル

* swiss chard スイスチャド

* Flaxseed oil フラックスシードオイル

* Wheat grass ウイートグラス

* Grapefruit グレープフルーツ

* Watermelon ウォーターメロン(西瓜)

Some of the most acidic foods are:

* White flour 小麦粉

* sugar 砂糖

* artificial sweeteners 人口甘味料

* ready made meals 冷凍食品の様な既に作られている食品

* processed meats 加工食肉(ハム、ベーコン等々)

* alcohol アルコール

* carbonated drinks 炭酸飲料

* cakes ケーキ

* ice cream アイスクリーム

* cheese チーズ

* milk ミルク

* MSG 味の素(モノソディウムグルタメイト)

Some of the healthiest acidic foods are brown rice, oats, fish, beans and lentils.

Most experts suggest eating four times more from the list of alkaline foods than from the acidic foods. Don't get stressed if you don't achieve this, it's an ideal to shoot for.

The most important thing we can do is to ensure that the majority of foods that we eat are fruits and vegetables.

(NaturalNews) The Japanese diet is one of the best in the world and is a healthy diet for obese children. Life expectancy is the highest in that country, and obesity has only recently become an issue with the infiltration of western fast foods.

The people of Okinawa, an island and prefecture of Japan, enjoy particularly vibrant health. They have a history of slow aging with delayed and often non existent chronic diseases including dementia, cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease and stroke) and cancer.

So what components make up this health giving diet?

Cruciferous Vegetables

The Japanese consume about five times the amount of cruciferous vegetables as the average westerner.

Cruciferous vegetables include cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, kale, watercress, radishes, parsnips, and turnips.

Shiitake Mushrooms

This has long been a symbol of longevity in Japan due to their health-promoting properties. They are most known for invigorating the immune system and fighting against disease and illness. They also lower cholesterol and are a powerful antioxidant.

Fish 魚

The Japanese diet abounds with fish, consumed at more than 154 pounds per person per year, almost one-half pound per day.

Fish that is rich in essential fatty acids is generally eaten daily, especially in the Okinawa region. Essential fats are known for a range of health benefits including reduced heart disease, lowered cholesterol, and improved brain function among them.

Seaweed 海草

Kombu (from cold waters) and Nori(from warm waters) seaweeds are plentiful in Japan. These contain high amounts of iodine as well as minerals and micro elements which impart robust health as well as being flavoursome.

Tofu

It also provides energy and is rich in antioxidant minerals.

Green Tea

Research has linked an increased consumption of this oriental infusion with a reduced risk of conditions such as cancer and heart disease. It is a powerful antioxidant.

Green tea has been linked to a reduced risk of cancer in both men and women. Research has found that individuals who consume green tea tend to have lower blood levels of cholesterol. Studies have also shown a decrease in blood pressure. Green tea consumption is linked with a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease.

A varied diet

The typical Japanese will have about 100 varieties of food per week compared with just 30 in the average British diet and 45 in the average southern European diet.

Low Cholesterol

High cholesterol foods such as red meat and cow's milk are almost non existent traditionally.

Low in Sugar

Sugar consumption is very low compared with the rest of the world, and the consumption is far lower in Okinawa compared to the rest of Japan.

80% full 80%

The Japanese are said to eat until they are 80% full rather than stuffed to the max.

US consumer confidence hits record low

US consumer confidence plummeted to its lowest level on record this month, as the deepening of the financial crisis made Americans suddenly much more pessimistic about their current situation and prospects.

Consumer confidence fell from a reading of 61.4 in September to 38 this month – the lowest level since the index was established more than 40 years ago and well below economists’ expectations that it would drop to 52.

The previous all-time low in the index was set in December 1974, when consumer confidence fell to a level of 43.2.

Most economists are predicting that consumption, which accounts for a large chunk of US gross domestic product, will shrink in the second half of 2008.

The bleak report on consumer confidence came an hour after it emerged that US home prices suffered a record drop of 16.6 per cent over the year to August 2008 – slightly worse than the annual drop of 16.3 per cent in July.

The worst price declines on an annual basis were in Phoenix, where prices have fallen by 30.7 per cent since August 2007, and Las Vegas, where prices have fallen by 30.6 per cent over the same period.

In US economic decline, worst is yet to come

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US economy contracted in the third quarter as panicked consumers slashed spending, data showed Thursday in the first downside leg of what analysts say could be a deep and nasty recession.

In its first reading of gross domestic product (GDP) in the July-September period, the Commerce Department said output of goods and services fell at a 0.3 percent annual pace amid a sharp retrenchment by consumers and businesses.

The drop in gross domestic product (GDP) was the first negative figure since the fourth quarter of 2007.
