Baking Soda Found To Help People with Chronic Kidney Disease

(NaturalNews) Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious condition marked by the permanent loss of kidney function. When the kidneys are damaged, the organs can't remove wastes and extra water from the blood as well as they should and the result can be a host of serious and even deadly health consequences. But now researchers in the United Kingdom have made a breakthrough in the treatment of advanced CKD -- and it doesn't involve a new drug or high tech surgery. Instead, it's simply a daily dose of sodium bicarbonate or, as it is more commonly called, baking soda.

Used for everything from baking cookies and non-toxic cleaning to relieving indigestion and sunburn, now baking soda has been shown to slow the decline of kidney function in CKD, according to a study set for publication in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). "This cheap and simple strategy also improves patients' nutritional status, and has the potential of translating into significant economic, quality of life, and clinical outcome benefits," researcher Magdi Yaqoob, MD, of the Royal London Hospital, said in a statement to the media.

This is an enormously important finding because CKD is a growing health problem, both in the UK and the US. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), between1990 and 2000, the number of people with kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation in the US virtually doubled to 380,000. If this trend continues, around 700,000 people will have serious kidney failure by 2010.

Dr. Yaqoob studied 134 patients with advanced CKD and low bicarbonate levels, a condition known as metabolic acidosis. One group of these patients was treated with a small daily dose of sodium bicarbonate in tablet form, in addition to their usual care. The results? The rate of decline in kidney function was dramatically reduced in these patients. Overall, the decline was about two-thirds slower than in patients not given sodium bicarbonate. "In fact, in patients taking sodium bicarbonate, the rate of decline in kidney function was similar to the normal age-related decline," Dr. Yaqoob stated.

The patients taking sodium bicarbonate were also less likely to develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) which causes people with CKD to undergo regular dialysis. In addition, those taking sodium bicarbonate also had improvement in several measures of nutrition. And, even though their levels of sodium went up, they did not experience increased blood pressure.


Low bicarbonate levels are common in patients with CKD and can lead to a wide range of other problems. "This is the first controlled study of its kind," says Yaqoob. "A simple remedy like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), when used appropriately, can be very effective."

The NIH estimates that 20 million Americans have significantly reduced kidney function, and even a small decline in kidney function can double a person's risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Many people will experience heart attacks or strokes before they are even aware they have kidney disease. SURGING levels of nitrates from nitrogen fertilisers and food additives have been strongly linked to a “pandemic” of diseases related to insulin resistance, including Alzheimers and Parkinsons.

In the US, use of nitrogenous fertilisers increased by 230 percent between 1955 and 2005. Usage doubled between 1960 and 1980—the decades immediately before what the researchers describe as “insulin-resistant epidemics” began to affect mortality statistics.

Dr de la Monte’s work links neuro-degenerative disease to fertiliser via compounds called nitrosamines.

Nitrosamines are formed in a chemical reaction between nitrates and proteins called amines.

Nitrates are present in high levels in many modern foods, particularly root vegetables, because of overuse of nitrogen fertilisers. They are also added as sodium nitrite, a preservative and food colouring, to products like bacon and manufactured meats.

Amines are in many foods, but are particularly high in meat and seafood.

The reaction that combines these molecules into destructive nitrosamines can be triggered by digestive juices in the mouth and stomach, or high-temperature cooking like frying and flame-grilling.

“We have become a ‘nitrosamine generation’,” Dr de la Monte said.

Dr de la Monte accepts that more than one factor may be at work, but nevertheless believes there is a strong case for banning nitrates from food processing.

She understands that they are not so easily removed from agriculture.

“Obviously replenishing the soil with something is necessary, but the degree to which nitrates are added could change. Root vegetables, for example, concentrate these things. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the biggest sources of exposure was to french fries.”

 話し変わって、ドイツではカール マルクスの著書が飛ぶように売れているとは一寸前のニュースですが、アメリカではドキュメンタリーフィルム製作者マイケル ムーアMichael Mooreの新しい映画 Capitalism:A Love Story“キャピタリズム:ア ラヴ ストーリー”がもう直ぐ公開されます。今夜マイケル ムーアがNBC放送のジェイ レノ ショー(http://www.thejaylenoshow.com/)に出演し此の新しい映画“キャピタリズム”について話していましたが、現在アメリカでは人口の最も裕福な1%が残りの貧しい94%の人口の持つ富と同じだと言っていました。残りの5%はやはり最も裕福な人口に続く人口なのだともいます。2004年の統計では金融資本的富については上部1%が全米の42%の富を所有し、最下部に所属する米国の80%の人口は全体のたった7%しか所有していないと言う事でしたから、2009年の現時点では状況は当然もっと悪化していると思います。極一部の富裕層が国の殆どの富を独占していた中米のガテマラやエルサルバドルの様なバナナリパブリックと言うアメリカ人が馬鹿にして呼んでいた国家状況にアメリカはレーガン大統領時代から陥っていたのですが今になってやっとアメリカ人は実感し始めているのだと思います。

SINCE the Green Revolution of the 1960s, the world has produced a lot
more grain—but there may be a lot less in it, a unique experiment in the United Kingdom has revealed.


Recent analysis of 160 years of crop samples from Rothamsted Research Station near London discovered that levels of essential micronutrients
remained consistent in wheat grain from 1844 to the late 1960s, but then began a decline that continues to this day.


The nutrient decline began when traditional long-straw wheat varieties
where phased out in favour of higher-yielding semi-dwarf varieties.


As wheat plants have grown smaller since the 1960s, grain
nutrient density has continued to decrease.


Compared to the old long-straw varieties, Rothamsted’s modern dwarf
wheat grain carries on average 20-30 per cent less zinc, iron, copper and magnesium.


For zinc, a critical human nutrient, the decline is even more pronounced
if the most recent five years of data are compared, with average
nutrient levels in wheat harvested from 1844-1967.


The Rothamsted work supports a United States Department of Agriculture study, published in 2006, that compared nutrient levels in hard red winter wheat varieties grown from 1873 to 2000.


The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) researchers found that compared to 130 years ago, modern varieties deliver 36 per cent less selenium, 34 per cent less zinc and 28 per cent less iron in their grain.


Nutrient decline in food is a driving force behind the organic farming sector, on the assumption that high-tech agricultural methods have depleted the mineral levels in soils and thus made less available for plants to take up.


But at Rothamsted, it seems that soil is not the issue.


The research project used the soil and grain archives of the research station’s 166-year-old Broadbalk experiment, the longest-running agricultural experiment in the world.


The Broadbalk wheat plots were established in 1843, and were laid out to compare the relative performance of wheat fertilised with inorganic fertilisers, farmyard manure, and wheat given no treatment at all.


Nutrient declines in grain have occurred across all these treatments to a similar degree—but mineral levels in the soil have either remained stable or increased.


Concentrations of zinc in the treated Broadbalk soils have increased 40-60 per cent since 1860, and yet zinc densities in grain have declined more than any other measured nutrient.


“We can’t put it down to soil impoverishment, so my guess is that the nutrient decline is related to plant physiology,” said Rothamsted researcher Professor Steve McGrath.


That presents three possible areas for further research.


One is that in selecting for dwarf plant genes, breeders have inadvertently dwarfed root mass and made the plant less capable of foraging for nutrients.


Another possibility arises if micronutrients are relocated from vegetative material into growing grain. “If the vegetative mass is smaller, it may mean there is less ability to translocate micronutrients into the grain,” Prof. McGrath said.


“The third possibility is dilution. The grain is bigger, the grain yield is larger than old varieties; is it just that less mobile micronutrients are just not catching up with grain production so you get a dilution effect?”


That answer isn’t likely to emerge anytime soon.


Prof. McGrath said there has been little apparent interest in the finding, and making a case for further research in a restricted funding environment is a long and complicated process with no guarantee of success.


However, he understands that micronutrient deficiency, zinc and iron in particular, are implicated in health problems across the developed and developing worlds alike.


“People are suffering growth, health and effects on mental development from lack of zinc and iron,” he said.


Dr Carole Hungerford, author of the Australian medical nutrition textbook “Good Health in the 21st Century”, wrote that zinc is an essential nutrient for fertility, bone and joint health and immunity.


It is also essential for the structural integrity of the DNA molecule, which has led some researchers to speculate that zinc deficiency may contribute to cancer.

Antioxidant in Berries Stops

(NaturalNews) Data is mounting that phytochemicals found in a host of berries and other fruits can enhance health from the inside. Now comes research just presented at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting being held in New Orleans that a specific type of antioxidant phytochemical called ellagic acid holds the promise of enhancing our bodies on the outside, too. In fact, it may hold the key to successfully slowing down or even stopping skin aging.


Researchers in the laboratory of Dr. Young-Hee Kang at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea have found topical application of ellagic acid markedly prevents the two major causes of wrinkles and aged-looking skin -- the destruction of collagen and inflammation. Their findings are based on studies in human skin cells as well as on experiments with mice exposed to UV-B light that mimics the sun's skin-damaging ultraviolet radioactive rays.


Ellagic acid is found in many fruits, vegetables and nuts but it is especially abundant in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and pomegranates. Previous studies have suggested it has a photoprotective effect on the skin so the Korean scientists decided to try to find out the exact mechanism. They discovered that in human skin cells, ellagic acid worked to protect against UV damage by blocking production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), enzymes that break down collagen in damaged skin cells. It also reduced the expression of a molecule known as ICAM that is involved in inflammatory reactions.

For their animal study, the researchers used 12 hairless mice genetically bred to be used in dermatology studies because of the physiological similarities of their skin to that of human skin. For about two months, the rodents were exposed to increasing ultraviolet radiation, beginning at a level that would normally cause redness or sunburn and increasing to an amount that would have definitely caused damage to a person's skin. Half the mice were given topical applications of ellagic acid but the other half didn't receive the antioxidant skin coating.


The results? The mice exposed to UV radiation without the ellagic treatment developed wrinkles and thickening of the skin but the group that received a topical dose of ellagic acid showed reduced wrinkle formation. What's more, the ellagic acid tamed the inflammation response, kept collagen from degrading and prevented the skin from thickening. In a statement for media, the researchers concluded these results show that ellagic acid works to prevent wrinkle formation and photo-aging caused by UV destruction of collagen and inflammation.


There's more good news about ellagic acid, too. Scientists from the University of Louisville and Fox Chase Cancer Center published research recently in the International Journal of Molecular Science which strongly suggests ellagic acid can reduce damage to DNA and, in fact, may help repair faulty DNA.

Omega-3 Kills Cancer Cells


ScienceDaily (Apr. 5, 2009) — Docosahexanoic acid (DHA), an omega-3
fatty acid found in fish oils, has been shown to reduce the size of
tumours and enhance the positive effects of the chemotherapy drug
cisplatin, while limiting its harmful side effects. The rat experiments
provide some support for the plethora of health benefits often ascribed
to omega-3 acids.

Professor A. M. El-Mowafy led a team of researchers from Mansoura
University, Egypt, who studied DHA's effects on solid tumours growing in mice, as well as investigating how this fatty acid interacts with cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug that is known to cause kidney damage. El-Mowafy said, "DHA elicited prominent chemopreventive effects on its own, and
appreciably augmented those of cisplatin as well. Furthermore, this study is the first to reveal that DHA can obliterate lethal cisplatin-induced
nephrotoxicity and renal tissue injury."

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is commonly found in cold-water fish
oil, and some vegetable oils. It is a major component of brain gray matter and of the retina in most mammalian species and is considered essential
for normal neurological and cellular developments. According to the
authors, "While DHA has been tentatively linked with protection against
cardiovascular, neurological and neoplastic diseases, there exists a
paucity of research information, in particular regarding its interactions
with existing chemotherapy drugs". The researchers found that, at the
molecular level, DHA acts by reducing leukocytosis (white blood cell
accumulation), systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress – all
processes that have been linked with tumour growth.
El-Mowafy and his colleagues have called for greater deployment of
omega-3 in the fight against cancer. They write, "Our results suggest a
new, fruitful drug regimen in the management of solid tumors based on
combining cisplatin, and possibly other chemotherapeutics, with DHA".

(NaturalNews) The story of mint begins with an ancient Greek myth. When Pluto began showering a wood nymph named Minthe with his affections, Persephone, Pluto's wife, became enraged. She cast a spell on Minthe and turned her into a garden plant. Pluto could not undo the spell. The best he was able to come up with was a pleasant aroma, so that Minthe would always be noticed. A charming story that factually tells us mint has been used by humans since ancient times.

Mint has always been used as an aromatic. People rubbed it on their dining tables, spread it on the floor, burned it for incense, added it to their baths and served it in tea. The two primary types of mint include peppermint and spearmint, although orange, apple, water, curly, cat and Corsican also exist. All told, there are at least 25 different kinds of mint. Both peppermint and spearmint taste like a cross between pepper and chlorophyll, but spearmint is said to have a cooler, more subtle flavor.

Oil of peppermint has been proven to hinder growth of the stomach ulcer bacteria, heliobacter pylori. It helps control colon spasms as well. It can stop the growth of MRSA ([gram-negative] methicillin resistant staff aureus.) In animal trials, peppermint has been shown to inhibit pancreatic cancer and may lower the risk of colon cancer. Mint is beneficial for asthmatics because it blocks production of chemicals called leukotrienes, one of the major factors in upper respiratory allergies.

Considered nutrient-dense, mint contains good amounts of fiber, iron, copper, calcium, folic acid, omega-3 concentrates, and it is low in calories. It is also known as a good source of ascorbic acid, potassium and manganese.

Choose fresh mint over dried whenever possible. Fresh mint has a much better flavor and contains all the nutrients mint can offer. Fresh mint needs to be stored in the refrigerator, loosely wrapped in a wet paper towel and placed in a plastic bag. It will keep for five to seven days. If you do buy dried mint, be sure it is organically grown. Organic mint is not irradiated.

Two tablespoons of fresh mint contains about one calorie. Added to fruit salad or tomato-based soups, it provides a bright, new flavor experience. You can use peppermint oil in the bath for a calming soak. A cup of mint tea at the end of a meal is a good digestive aid. Just be sure to keep the tea covered while it steeps, to retain the oils.

Mint is easy to grow at home. In fact, it will soon take over your garden if not properly managed. It spreads by runners, so cutting three inches off a clean coffee can and planting that two inches into the earth around the plants will make it easy to keep the runners trim. Mint is delightful in the outdoor garden. Crushing a few leaves as you work in the garden will promote a pungent but pleasant fragrance for you to enjoy. Mint is a perennial, so it will return year after year. It can be grown indoors in a pot on a moderately sunny windowsill and you can enjoy its benefits year-round.

Fountain is a 1917 work by Marcel Duchamp. It is one of the pieces which he called readymades (also known as found art), because he made use of an already existing object—in this case a urinal, which he titled Fountain and signed "R. Mutt". The art show to which Duchamp submitted the piece stated that all works would be accepted, but Fountain was not actually displayed, and the original has been lost. The work is regarded by some as a major landmark in 20th century art. [2] Replicas commissioned by Duchamp in the 1960s are now on display in museums.

For Wall Street workers still employed, there could be a hefty bonus in their checks next month.

According to a report from financial news agency Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs, for example, has set aside $6.8 billion for bonuses, and Morgan Stanley, $6.4 billion.
